CROSSFIELDS, ST ALBANS.
We were instructed to create a new 4 bedroom home for our client. Their brief was to take elements from Passihaus standards to create a energy efficient house.
The scheme looks to super insulate the house, incorporate a heat recovery system, underfloor heating and thermal mass.
The rear of the house is centred around a courtyard space giving privacy to our client in their garden.
Our client wanted to incorporate a large garage which has been sunken into the ground and is therefore not visible from street level, thus creating the impression of a smaller dwelling and in keeping with the size of existing dwellings on the street.
The existing garage to the rear has been retained and remodelled to incorporate it into the house.
The use of brick to clad the outside of the building was driven by the client and by creating set backs within the facades has reduced the bulkiness of the house.
The brick is translated inside into a feature wall to create a connection in materiality with the outside of the house. Rising through the house as a prominent feature.
